Succeeding the Bana class, Apitos were Osea's second class of guided missile frigates. Intended as a common vessel for Western procurement, they were generally capable anti-submarine and ship-to-ship platforms, but suffered in anti-air capabilities. This became apparent after the Wesson incident, when the OFS Wesson was crippled by anti-ship missiles fired by Scofieldian MiGs, and Osean allies became reluctant to procure the craft.
Instead of Apitos, the WFR-80 program resulted in the mass acquisition of the Cormorantclass. The OMDF kept its six vessels in service, but they fared poorly in the Circum-Pacific War when the four ships stationed in the Pacific were sunk to Yuktobanian fire.
