Under Osean pressure, the FCU's strategic nuclear arsenal was limited to aircraft-delivered bombs and cruise missiles throughout most of the Cold War along with limited ICBM reserves unable to be launched without Osean authorization. As Yuktobanian strategy shifted towards decapitation counterforce strikes, the FCU sought strategic autonomy from Osea's forces, ensuring it could retain a deterrent should Osea's command authority be wiped out. In order to complete their nuclear triad, the Dragonet class SSBN was ordered in the late 1970s. With a design combining the layout of the Yuktobanian Typhoon class SSBN and refined hull features and equipment from Osea's November City class SSN and Eaglin class SSBN, the resulting ships are highly-capable strategic deterrents as adept at defending themselves as most attack subs. Later, in the early 1990s, two ships were converted to guided missile subs (SSGN) as nuclear deterrence became increasingly irrelevant in the post-Cold War era.
When Erusea seized Stonehenge in 2003, the FCUN's Dragonets were recalled to North Point to stay hidden in the island nation's fjords as a nuclear deterrent after all of the FCU's land-based arsenal was overrun. However, their strategic capabilities were nullified by Stonehenge. Two additional ships were converted into SSGNs in the postwar years.
