Erusea has long been recognized as a regional power in Usea, and despite its peaceful stance the postwar government has insisted on retaining enough strength to counter Central Usean military, cultural, and economic hegemony from undermining Erusean sovereignty. Reidar Selgelid's reforms during his time as Chief of Staff set the stage for Erusean strategy in the coming decades, combining domestic policing abilities with moderate power projection.
Free Erusean Air Force
FEAF F-15Cs of the 2d FS
Not only did the FEAF suffer from a lack of strategic coordination - similar to the fatal flaw of the Belkan Air Force in 1995 - in Bruunist times, but it also was unable to effectively work together with other branches of the military. Addressing both of these issues has been paramount in the postwar years. The former problem was solved relatively quickly with a restructuring of the Air Force, which had previously utilized a unique Erusean form of unit organization, into units based on the OADF's and FCUAF's models. This structure allowed for continued tactical coordination within squadrons while assigning all offensive assets complementary AWACS, tankers, and other logistical assets. The latter has been an ongoing effort since 2006 with the introduction of Joint Forces Command. The FEAF's Air Mobility Command has also been greatly expanded with additional C-17As and C-130Js in the postwar years, greatly supplementing the Army's deployability domestically and internationally.
Logistical issues plagued the FEAF during the Continental War as its aircraft inventory came from a wide range of sources - Western, Belkan, and Yuktobanian suppliers - all of whom had their own avionics and weapons systems. Under pressure from the FCU and Osea, the modernized FEAF has focused on the retirement of its Eastern and Belkan craft in favor of new Western acquisitions. As of 2010 its forces were primarily made up of F-16s and F-15 variants with remaining Eastern craft assigned to their own wings in anticipation of retirement. Its Raptor inventory, seized from the FCUAF during the war but payed for postbellum in order to keep them in service, puts the FEAF technologically on par with the FCUAF and Royal Air Force.
Free Erusean Army
An Erusean Leopard 2
Erusea's Army forms the core of its military might through a combination of rapidly deployable conventional forces and special operations units recognized as being amongst the most elite in the world. Utilizing Western and Belkan small arms compliant with UTO STANAGs, well-trained in combined arms combat, and outfitted with networked warfighting equipment, the Erusean Army is a smaller force than its conscripted wartime counterpart but is generally recognized as a better-trained and overall more competent infantry force, though it cannot match the FCU's strength. Its Leopard 2 main battle tanks are roughly on par with the FCU's M1s and army aviation assets including both AH-64 Apaches and Mi-24 Hinds as well as utility and logistical craft provide infantry with mobility and firepower.
Erusea's ARSOC SOF forces grew out of the need to suppress domestic strife in the Twinkle Islands and Delarus, and later to defeat the more numerous forces of ISAF. The Haerens Jegerstrykar are effective light infantry for combat against uniformed and irregular foes. The Spesialkommandos, however, are where ARSOC truly shines. Once a unit of the Forsvarets Spesialstykar, they have lived on in the wake of the FSS's disestablishment in 2007 albeit with significant changes to their officer corps. Regardless, they are considered to be on par with Osea's Delta Force as an asymmetric unit and are an extreme deterrent to aggression against Erusea.
Free Erusean Navy
The FES Frigga
The Erusean Navy's strategy during the Continental War focused on using Bannion class battleships as its primary offensive forces, with aircraft carriers primarily focused on providing air cover to the battleships. The loss of the FES Thor and FES Loki, however, have forced a revision of Erusean strategy to shift its focus towards offensive air operations like most Western nations. As of 2010 Erusea operates the Hubert class (Barbet subclass) FES Rán (CVN-02) and Intrepid class FES Frigga (CVN-01). While the Frigga leads the Aesir Fleet in the Cascade Ocean and the Rán is the Atlantic Vanir Fleet's flagship, the expeditionary Aegir Fleet has not been returned to service after its destruction by ISAF and the Marines have been downsized in favor of asymmetrical NAVSOC assets including the Marine Spesialkommando. Postwar aircraft acquisitions to improve naval aviation capabilities have included F-14D(R)s, F/A-18Es, EA-18Gs, and SH-9Gs.
