The Excalibur class was designed to take advantage of developments in phased array radar for air defense of carrier battlegroups. Built on the hulls of Cavalierclass destroyers, Excaliburs entered service in 1976 and were immediately regarded as the most capable air defense systems in the world.
Flight I vessels were built with Mk. 26 launchers, limiting them to four launches before reloading. This variant was supplied to the OMDF in small numbers and exported to the FCU, North Point, and Erusea. Flight II replaced these launchers with Mk. 43 VLS cells, greatly increasing the ships' fire rates. The OMDF acquired several Flight II ships, and the FCU also upgraded its arsenal to Flight II standard. Although replaced by the CG(X) project in Osea, the GRFD found Excaliburs to be more cost efficient and purchased the FCUN's five surviving vessels plus the three ex-Royal Navy ships after the Unification War.
