The Atomic Age heralded in great enthusiasm about the application of nuclear fission power to propel warships; a nuclear-powered carrier battlegroup could theoretically be deployed indefinitely through constant underway replenishment operations, allowing for an unmatched presence in power projection. The OMDF eventually deemed its nuclear-powered escort ship programs too costly, but continued work on nuclear-power carriers. The Intrepid, intended to be a single-ship demonstrator, entered service in 1959 and was so impressive to foreign observers in terms of its reliability compared with older Kingfisher class ships that the Federal Erusean Navy ordered its own vessel. Both the OMDF and FEN kept their Intrepids in service well into the 21st Century through modernization programs and two refueling cycles, and experience designing and operating the ships benefited the Hubert class's development.
Ships
OFS Intrepid (CVN-20) - The seventh OFS Intrepid, the CVN-20 was operated as a component of Atlantic Command with the 5th Fleet throughout her career. Commissioned in 1959, she saw action in the Battle of Oured in the Belkan War and launched airstrikes on Adama and Leasath before being decommissioned in 2011. She has since been turned into a museum ship in Oured.
FES Frigga (CVN-1) - Ordered by the post-First Republic junta and delivered in 1962, before Erusea overtly turned away from the West's sphere of influence. Operated as a component of the Aesir Fleet, geographically separated from every conflict until the Delarussian Secession Crisis, until her decommissioning in 2017. Replaced as flagship of the Aesir Fleet by the Hubert class FES Hlín (CVN-3).
